GRANGEVILLE, ID – Investigators from the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office have completed their investigation into the origin and cause of the fire that tragically took the lives of two occupants in their home in Grangeville last week. Investigators determined that a wood-burning stove inserted into a fireplace had deteriorated over time which resulted in superheated gases escaping and breaching the brick-and-mortar chimney. This exposed structural components which then ignited.

“It is always saddening when someone loses their life, especially under these circumstances. Our condolences to the family,” the agency says.

As a reminder to all Idahoans, have your chimney and fireplaces inspected by a qualified technician on an annual basis.
