LC State Track and Field Indoor Nationals Preview

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Eleven individuals and two relays are South Dakota bound to represent Lewis-Clark State College Track and Field at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships March 2-4. Ten of the individuals will be making their first trip to indoor nationals to compete in a solo event.

THE WOMEN

Madigan Kelly is the lone Warrior that has competed in an individual event at indoor nationals. The sophomore from Lewiston is seeded 12th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.68. She finished 16th last year in South Dakota. Teammate Sara Hathaway will join her in the event as the 36th seed (9.05). It is the only event that features more than on LC State competitor.

Jennah Carpenter is the highest-seeded athlete between both Warrior teams at third in the high jump. The sophomore was an All-American in the outdoor event last year and is ranked third in the indoor field with a height of 1.70m. She is seeded ninth in the pentathlon (3,340 points).

Geraldin Correa is the No. 8 seed in the 800m with a time of 2:16.90. She could also play a factor in the women’s distance medley relay that is seeded 15th in the field.

Orofino’s Sydnie Zywina will make her nationals debut in the triple jump. Her mark of 11.63m ranks 14th in the field heading into the event.

Freshman Emily Collins will compete at her first national event as the 15th-ranked 400m runner in the field (57.82). Fellow Lewiston High School grad Anika Grogan is seeded 27th in the 200m (25.22).

THE MEN

Carter Gordon and Brycen Brown are each making their second trip to indoor nationals, but their first to compete as individuals. Both were members of last season’s men’s distance medley relay. This year, Gordon is the 15th seed in the 600m (1:21.48) and Brown is the 20th seed in the 3,000m (8:33.97). They could also be pieces of the men’s 4x800m relay that is seeded fourth in the field.

Deary native London Kirk is ranked fifth in the 400m (48.10), as well as 29th in the 200m (21.81). He is the only LC men’s athlete competing in two running events.

Christian Bothwell is ranked 15th in the heptathlon with 4,660 points. He tied the school record in at the final meet of the season to earn his spot in the two-day event.

THE DETAILS

All five events in the pentathlon will take place on March 2, starting at 10 a.m. The first four events of the heptathlon will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the final three will take place on March 3 starting at 8 a.m.

Both LC State relays will run in the prelims on March 2, with the men’s 4x800m relay running at 2 p.m. and the women’s distance medley relay at 3:30 p.m. The rest of the prelims will take place on March 3, starting with the women’s 60m hurdles at 10:35 a.m. The 400m prelims will run back-to-back starting at 11:05 a.m., the men’s 600m will take place at 12:05 p.m., and the women’s 800m prelim is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.

The men’s 3,000m prelim race will take place at 2:15 p.m., and the 200m prelims will run back-to-back at 2:40 p.m.

The first event final will be the men’s 4x800m relay on March 3 at 3:35 p.m.

The rest of the event finals, including the women’s triple jump (8 a.m.) and high jump (11:30 a.m.) will take place on March 4.
