The sentencing for a teenager who was convicted last year of first-degree murder, will be in April.
The Lewiston Tribune reports that during a status conference hearing for Demetri Ewing yesterday (Thurs) at the Nez Perce County Courthouse, Ewing’s public defender Lawrence Moran requested the April setting to allow retired 2nd District Judge Jay Gaskill to conduct the sentencing because he was the presiding judge over the trial. Moran said that Gaskill and deputy prosecutor April Smith agreed to the arrangement.
Gaskill retired Dec. 30 and although he has senior judge status he wasn’t able to take any cases until 90 days after his retirement.
Ewing, along with his father, Clyde Ewing, was charged in the shooting death of Samuel Johns on Jan. 8, 2021 at John’s Lewiston residence. Demetri Ewing was 16 years old at the time of the shooting. He was convicted April 22nd.
Clyde Ewing was also convicted in May and sentenced in December to life in prison without parole.
