UI Considering Posthumous Degrees For Murdered Students

untitled-design-2

MOSCOW, ID – The University of Idaho is looking into possibly awarding posthumous degrees to the four students who were murdered in the early morning hours of November 13th at a residence near the University’s Moscow campus. Dean of Students Blaine Eckles told KOZE.com they are considering recognizing the academic success of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves.

Eckles says it would be a great tribute to the students.

According to University documents, in the instance of a student’s death prior to degree completion, it is important that they “recognize the effort made toward degree achievement.”

Meanwhile, a vigil will be held at 5:00 p.m. (PST) tomorrow in the University of Idaho’s ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center. Others will take place simultaneously in Coeur d’Alene, McCall, Boise, and Idaho Falls. Visit uidaho.edu/remember for details. It will also be streamed live at uidaho.edu/live.

Eckles says the vigils will allow Vandals nationwide to support and lean on each other, and help uplift the families of the victims.

He adds that there are a few ways in which the Vandal community can help the families of the victims.

Eckles also asks that communities turn their porch lights on at 5:00 p.m.

Lewis-Clark State College and the Lewiston School District will participate in the vigil by turning on stadium lights.

Eckles says the stabbing murders of Ethan, Xana, Madison, and Kaylee are stark reminders that violent crime can happen anywhere – not just in the big cities.
