The Lewiston City Council has approved a city ordinance change allowing the Mayor to choose six department heads without a vote from the council.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that under the change, the Mayor will now determine the police chief, fire chief, public works director, human resources director, parks and recreation director, and community development director.

Previously, those positions were hired by the city manager and confirmed by the city council.

In other city business: the council voted down a proposed revision to an amendment to the employment separation agreement with former city administrative services director, chief financial officer and city treasurer, Dan Marsh, who made the request.

Councilors also agreed to have a work session about potential places for a low-barrier homeless shelter with Nez Perce County, Asotin County and the City of Clarkston. The council voted against a 35-bed homeless shelter earlier this month at 1332 G St. A vote on a written version of that decision was scheduled for Monday, but the council tabled it.

The council approved the purchase of a Vactor sewer cleaning truck from Owen Equipment Company for just over $476,600. (Lewiston Tribune)
