The rape trial of former Lewiston state Representative Aaron von Ehlinger got underway Tuesday in Boise.
The 39-year-old former lawmaker is charged with two felony counts of rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object. If convicted, he faces a maximum of life in prison and a $50,000 fine.
A jury consisting of seven men and five women heard opening statements from both the prosecution and defense.
Von Ehlinger has maintained his innocence, calling the encounter consensual.
The trial is scheduled to last four days.
