Tax filing extensions available to some Idahoans

Idahoans unable to file their 2021 Idaho income tax return by the Monday, April 18th deadline may qualify for an extension.

An automatic six month extension can be attained one of two ways: By paying 80% of the estimated tax owed for 2021; or by paying 100% of the total tax reported on a tax filer’s 2020 income tax return, if a return was filed.

An automatic extension means a written request isn’t necessary. But an extension of time to file a return isn’t an extension of time to pay taxes owed. With a valid extension, tax filers can avoid a penalty for filing late, but will owe 3% annual interest on any tax owed after April 18 until it’s paid.

To see if a tax filer qualifies for an extension, the worksheet on Idaho Form 51, Estimated Payment of Individual Income Tax, must be completed. The worksheet will help figure out if more tax is owed beyond any payments made or any amounts withheld from paychecks or unemployment checks. Form 51 can be found on the Idaho Tax Commission website at tax.idaho.gov.

Anyone qualifying for an extension to file, must file an Idaho tax return and pay any tax still due by October 17th.
