A Lewiston man is under arrest for arson following a house fire in downtown Lewiston early Sunday morning.

The fire at 1511 Sixth Ave. was reported around 6:40 a.m. Sunday, and flames were coming out of windows on multiple sides of the house when Lewiston Fire Department crews arrived on scene.

Crews briefly attempted to gain entry to search for people, but the blaze prevented firefighters from entering. It was later determined the home was unoccupied and there were no injuries reported.

Crews had the fire under control after about an hour and stayed on scene for several hours putting out hot spots and investigating the fire’s cause.

Following the investigation, 62-year-old Robert Charpentier was taken into custody and charged with first-degree arson.
