Homeless told to move from Clarkston park as crews begin project

Homeless individuals at Clarkston’s Gateway Park must move as a municipal project to remove tables, benches and garbage bins gets underway.

The work near the Interstate Bridge is part of a plan aimed at returning the property to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The city of Clarkston gave the corps six months notice on Aug. 23 that it would relinquish its lease for the park after escalating issues surfaced in June and July with homeless individuals, including increasing amounts of garbage, needles and human feces.

According to the Lewiston Tribune, the city’s agreement with the corps requires the city to take out any upgrades it’s added, unless the corps asks them to be left.

A temporary fence will surround part of the park during the work.

Possessions left at the park will be taken to the Clarkston Police Department where they can be claimed.  (Lewiston Tribune)
