Region reports 89 new COVID infections, two deaths

Regional health officials reported a combined 89 new coronavirus cases and two deaths Wednesday.

In north central Idaho: Nez Perce County reported 18 new cases and one death; Latah County had 16 new infections; Clearwater County’s number of new cases climbed by 11; Lewis County added 7 more infections; and Idaho County had two new cases, and one COVID-related death on Wednesday. Health officials say 20 percent of new infections in the Public Health Idaho North Central District involve children between 5 and 17 years of age.

In southeastern Washington: Asotin County added 18 new infections; Whitman County saw it’s number of cases grow by 13; and Garfield County reported 4 new virus infections.

Meanwhile, the Nezperce School District has closed school for its kindergarten through 8 grades due to high absences related to the virus. According to school officials, the virus is affecting more than one quarter of students in those grades. Students at Nezperce High School are not impacted and will continue to have classes in-person. The elementary and junior high classes will resume on September 27th.

In the Kamiah School District, multiple classrooms are closed and many students are quarantining until Sept. 21st. (Lewiston Tribune, Nezperce School District)
