A fast-moving wildfire forced the evacuation of the small Nez Perce County community of Lenore and surrounding areas.
Gusty winds pushed the fire in Bedrock Creek Canyon toward the town and other residences. People living in the Sunnyside Bench and Hanks Road areas were also told to evacuate as the fire grew to more than 400 acres.
Several area wildfire agencies responded and air tankers and helicopters worked to drop retardant and water in efforts to slow the fire’s spread.
The blaze was first reported shortly after 1pm and the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office issued the first evacuation notice about two hours later.
Evacuees are welcome to come to the Lenore Community Center on U.S. Highway 12.
