Region reports additional COVID-19 cases, Whitman County announces first death

Health districts across the north central Idaho and southeastern Washington region reported a total of 69 new positive coronavirus cases on Tuesday, including the first COVID-related death in Whitman County.

Health officials in Whitman County say the death involved a woman between the ages of 60 and 79 who had underlying health conditions. The county reported a total of 9 new infections Tuesday. Neighboring Asotin County added 8 new coronavirus infections Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Public Health – Idaho North Central District reported 52 new virus infections on Tuesday.

Latah County, which has seen the highest transmission rate recently, had 26 more positive cases on Tuesday. Officials believe the majority of cases have involved students at the University of Idaho where an outbreak on Greek Row was reported late last month.

Nez Perce County reported 9 new infections, including a student at Lewiston High School. Officials say the student had been absent for some time and was likely a minimal exposure risk. Still, the district is working with the health department to identify any close contacts, and buildings on campus have already been cleaned and disinfected. LHS will remain in the green phase, meaning in-person instruction will continue.

Elsewhere in the north central Idaho district: Clearwater County reported 10 new coronavirus infections, Idaho County added 5, and Lewis County reported 2 new COVID-19 cases. (Lewiston Tribune)
