Petition drive for Idaho education funding ballot initiative called off due to COVID-19

Concerns over the coronavirus have put on hold an Idaho petition drive for a ballot initiative to raise money for schools.

Reclaim Idaho was suspending signature gathering operations for its Invest in Idaho initiative, which seeks to provide $170 million for K-12 education by raising the state’s corporate tax rate and increasing taxes on those making $250,000 or more per year.

The group says it had gathered more than half of the 55,000 signatures needed ahead of the April 30th deadline to get the initiative on the November ballot. However, Reclaim Idaho officials say health guidelines run contrary to the one-on-one contact inherent to the ballot initiative process.

Reclaim Idaho was behind the successful 2018 effort to get Medicaid expansion on the Idaho ballot. That measure passed with strong support from voters. (AP)
