Fee hikes for nonresident Idaho hunters, anglers signed into law

Nonresident Idaho anglers and hunters will pay significantly more money to fish, and hunt deer and elk in the Gem State.

Governor Brad Little signed into law legislation the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says resident hunters sought to ease overcrowding in the field. While the agency is capping how many nonresidents can hunt deer and elk, it will result in reducing Fish and Game revenue with fewer nonresident hunters, at a loss of between $5 million and $9 million a year.

To make up for that, an elk tag for a nonresident hunter would climb from $417 to $650, while a fishing license would cost about $106, up from $98.

The increases go into effect in December.

Fish and Game says the increases are the first in 10 years for nonresidents and put the state more in line with what neighboring states charge nonresidents for hunting and fishing.

About 39,000 nonresidents bought Idaho elk and deer tags in 2019. (AP)
