Same-sex marriage in Idaho marks 5 years as advocates seek to ‘add the words’

This week marks the 5th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared same-sex marriage legal in Idaho, and advocates say much still needs to be done in the Gem State.

The High Court’s decision followed a lawsuit brought against the state for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Since its legalization on October 15th 2014, many same-sex couples have tied the knot in Idaho. However, the Republican-led Legislature has refused to add the words “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to the human rights act, meaning discrimination can still continue for the LGBTQ community in areas of employment and housing.

State lawmakers considered adding the words in the 2019 Legislative Session, but the bill ultimately died. (KIVITV.com)
