A man believed responsible for a mass stabbing in Boise last year that left a 3-year-old girl dead and eight other people wounded has been found competent to stand trial.

31-year-old Timmy Kinner was charged with first-degree murder and several counts of aggravated battery after authorities say he attacked several people at a Boise apartment complex in June 2018. Earlier this year, a Fourth District Judge found Kinner “dangerously mentally ill” and unable to assist in his own defense.

In the months since he has been held in a secure mental health facility while professionals worked to restore his competency for trial. In a written order Friday the judge said Kinner now has a rational and factual understanding of the proceedings against him, and is able to consult with his attorney.

He is scheduled to stand trial in January, and faces the death penalty if convicted. (AP, Idaho Statesman)
