Idaho conservation officers are investigating the illegal shooting of a bull elk that was left to waste near Orofino.

According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, a local landowner reported hearing a shot off of Harmony Heights Loop Road Tuesday night around 9 o’clock, and the landowner discovered a wounded elk in the field early the next morning. There currently is no open hunting season for elk in that area.

Fish and Game determined the elk was shot with a rifle in the spine.
