Idaho continues to lead Western states in farm receipts on a per capita basis, according to data by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service.

In 2018, California led the West, and nation, with $50 billion in total farm cash receipts, or the amount of revenue a farmer or rancher gets for their commodity. Washington ranked second with $9.4 billion and Idaho was third at $7.4 billion. However, Idaho farmers and ranchers produce far more farm revenue per state resident than producers in any of the other of the 11 Western states.

The Gem State produced $4,300 in cash receipts per state resident in 2018, up about $20 from the year prior. In comparison, California’s per capita farm income average in 2018 was $1,263 and Washington’s was $1,269. The state closest to Idaho was Montana, with a per capita average of $3,326, followed by Wyoming, and New Mexico.

A University of Idaho study found that agriculture accounts for 13 percent of Idaho’s total gross state product, and only about 2 percent of California’s GSP. The study also found that agriculture is responsible for $26 billion in sales in Idaho and one of every eight jobs. (Idaho Farm Bureau Federation)
