Searchers find body of Deary High School student who fell in Elk Creek Falls

body-found

Searchers on Wednesday night found the body of a Deary High School student who went missing Sunday after he fell at Elk Creek Falls.

According to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, the body of 16-year-old Luis Diaz, of Bovill, was wedged in rocks and crews were unable to remove him Wednesday.

Deputies, along with an Idaho Department of Fish and Game officer were to remain at the falls overnight, with efforts to retrieve Diaz’s body resuming Thursday morning.

Diaz was hiking around the falls with friends Sunday afternoon when he apparently slipped and went over the edge into a 23-foot-deep pool of water.

Authorities spent much of the last couple of days working to control the flow of Elk Creek by using the spillway upstream at Elk Creek Reservoir. The flow was reduced enough for searchers to access the area behind the falls.

The sheriff’s office has asked the public to stay away from the Elk Creek Falls area until Diaz is recovered. (Lewiston Tribune)
