An armed suspect who had stolen several vehicles as he evaded law enforcement officials through north-central Idaho has been taken into custody.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect was apprehended Wednesday morning.

Authorities had been looking for the unidentified man in the Cottonwood Creek and Red Rock drainage area following a pursuit that began Tuesday in Adams County when the suspect stole a vehicle and drove north from New Meadows towards Grangeville. He drove over spike strips in Idaho County, abandoned the car, and stole another vehicle as he continued north. He hit another set of spike strips, ditched that car, and stole another.

The incident prompted alerts, and hospital and school lockdowns in the Grangeville area.

An Idaho State Police SWAT team held a perimeter line overnight, and a helicopter search resumed Wednesday morning.

The suspect was captured sometime before 9 a.m., and the incident remains under investigation.
