A Lewiston man died and three others were injured in a multiple boat crash Saturday during the Thunder on the Snake jet boat race.
According to the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, authorities responded around 10 AM to a report of the accident with two jet boats involved when racers were competing in a two-leg trip from Hells Gate Marina to Bear Bar and back.
Steve Wessels Junior died at the scene, while the other three people involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Nez Perce County’s Marine unit, Asotin County Marine 61, Asotin County Sheriff’s Office, Lewiston medics, Life Flight and race safety boats responded.
The remainder of the event’s races were canceled, and the incident remains under investigation. (Nez Perce County Sheriff, Lewiston Tribune)
