The Lewiston School District has adopted a new middle school model of sixth through eighth grades starting with the 2020-21 school year after the school board unanimously approved a resolution at a special meeting Monday night.

The change will turn Lewiston’s two junior high schools into middle schools.

Sixth-grade students will move out of the elementary schools and into the middle schools, while the ninth-graders — currently housed within the junior highs — will move to the new high school, set to open for the 2020-21 school year.

Officials say the switch will provide sixth-grade students at the middle schools with earlier access and more opportunities in electives, career-technical programs and extracurricular activities. The move will also provide more space for the district’s all-day kindergarten program and other activities. (Lewiston Tribune)
