Nez Perce County Commissioners have approved a five-year, 75 percent property tax exemption on a planned $20 million investment Idaho Forest Group is making to its Lewiston sawmill.

The company is adding new equipment that will allow the mill to handle logs as large as 40 inches in diameter. The equipment features cutting-edge technology that scans logs as they enter the mill and will represent a significant upgrade to its large-log line that was built in the 1920s and was last upgraded in the 1980s.

Based on the current levy rates and the estimated value of the new equipment, the exemption will give the company a tax break of about $185,000 in the first year of the deal.

Even with the exemption, the county stands to net an additional $61,000 in tax revenue based on the remaining 25 percent value of the upgrade.

Its the third temporary tax exemption the commission has approved for large employers in the county. Other companies to ask for and receive 75 percent breaks on new equipment include Clearwater Paper and Vista Outdoor. (Lewiston Tribune)
