Lewiston School Board OKs storage of rifles on school property

The Lewiston School Board has voted to equip the district’s secondary schools with gun safes in which school resource officers can store their rifles.

The Lewiston Police Department approached the district earlier this year about the storage of rifles on school property to allow for easier access if needed during an emergency situation.

Historically, the firearms have been stowed in the school resource officer’s vehicle, but officers say if a situation occurs, here’s a low likelihood of retrieving a rifle from their vehicle. Access will be limited to school resource officers at Sacajawea Junior High, Jenifer Junior High, and Lewiston High School. The rifles would be brought in by the officers at the start of the day and removed when they leave the building.

The district will purchase the gun safes for the three buildings, and Superintendent Bob Donaldson expects the safes and new protocol to be in place within the next couple of months. (Lewiston Tribune)
