The operator of an ultralight aircraft was killed in a crash near Boyer Park Wednesday morning upstream from Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River.

According to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, the pilot, 64-year-old Ronny Weston of Cheney, died at the scene. Authorities responded at 7:15am after a Lower Granite Dam worker witnessed the Solaris model aircraft wreckage on the railroad tracks east of Boyer Park.

Ultralight aircraft are small, single-engine machines flown by a solitary pilot.

Weston was reportedly an experienced pilot who left a nearby airstrip around 6:30am.

The Whitman County Coroner’s Office is investigating to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The Federal Aviation Administration is also expected to investigate the crash.  (Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, Lewiston Tribune)
