A helicopter doing contract work for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife crashed Saturday in northern Garfield County, killing one passenger and injuring the pilot and another occupant.

Authorities say the helicopter crashed at about 2 PM between Meadow Creek Road and Lower Deadman Road, 25 miles north of Pomeroy.  One person was found dead at the scene.

The helicopter, operated by Clarkston-based Kiwi Air, was contracted by Fish and Wildlife to help with mule deer surveying.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Hughes 369D aircraft crashed due to “unknown circumstances.”

The FAA, Washington State Patrol, and National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation. (AP, Lewiston Tribune, Spokesman-Review)
