The first day of trial for the man charged in the killing of a Coeur d’Alene police officer began with the accused’s lawyers describing the action as self-defense.

Attorneys representing 29-year-old Jonathan Renfro, who faces first degree murder in connection with the 2015 shooting death of Sergeant Greg Moore, said on Monday that their client didn’t intend to kill the officer.  Rather, they contend that Renfro reacted instinctually when Moore reached for his sidearm and that the officer’s death should be consider manslaughter.

Prosecutors say the defendant wanted to kill Moore as Renfro was high on methamphetamine and was in possession of a stolen gun.

The court heard seven hours of testimony from 10 witnesses, and prosecutors played Moore’s body camera footage moments before the shooting.

Renfro faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.   (AP)
