Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, has awarded a $287,000 grant to the Lewis-Clark State College Service Corps to continue its AmeriCorps program.

LCSC will use the grant to fund 32 AmeriCorps members who will serve as tutors and mentors to students in grades K-through-12.

AmeriCorps members receive a modest stipend and an education award to help pay for college or to pay back qualified student loans.  The program places individuals age 17 and older at host sites, including public or alternative schools, where they help economically disadvantaged students, students with special or exceptional needs, or underachieving students.

Applications are currently being accepted for both full-time and part-time AmeriCorps members throughout Idaho, including current openings in Moscow, Coeur d’Alene, Caldwell, and Kuna.  Lewis-Clark Service Corps will have a volunteer center in Kellogg with two additional AmeriCorps VISTA positions to coordinate volunteers for K-12 students in the Silver Valley.

It’s the second straight year Lewis-Clark State has had the AmeriCorps program.  LCSC served as a host for the program for 19 years until federal funding for the program was eliminated in 2014.  After a two-year absence, LC brought the program back last year.

Serve Idaho encourages voluntary public service and volunteerism throughout the state.  It is funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Idaho Department of Labor.  (Lewis-Clark State College)
