Sunday’s rain led to minimal activity Monday on an 8,400 acre wildfire burning on the Gospel Hump Wilderness in north-central Idaho.

Operations on the western side of the Hanover Fire focused on cutting and removing brush along roads.  Crews also patrolled the southwest line where a burnout was conducted to ensure it was secure, while opportunities for control lines on the eastern side are being evaluated.  The Salmon River Structure group continued patrolling the Salmon River for any advance of the fire downslope.  Fuel mitigation and cleanup on the western and northern flanks continued Tuesday.  The fire southwest of Square Mountain Lookout is about 35 percent contained.

Meanwhile, new fires continue to be detected across the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests as a result of Saturday’s thunderstorms.

Firefighting resources responded quickly to staff fires not being managed for resource benefits, and are working on suppression activities, completing mop up operations or have contained the fires.  Otherwise, minimal fire activity was observed on the larger fires, including the 4,600 acre Hidden fire, the 7,800-acre Moose Creek 1 fire, the 5,600-acre Lone Pine fire, and the 4,100-acre Rattlesnake Point fire.  (Lewisto Tribune)
