Results from the latest testing of contaminated water near Clarkston’s Chestnut Beach show unhealthy conditions remain.
The public was advised last week to not swim or play in shoreline Snake River water along the area after routine weekly testing results showed elevated levels of fecal bacteria. Samples taken Tuesday were still above Washington’s health standards.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the contamination likely developed because of waterfowl feces, combined with recent higher seasonal temperatures. The area remains open, though as a precaution, warning signs have been posted near the shoreline.
The Corps will test the beach weekly and notify the public when it is safe to swim. (Lewiston Tribune)
