Eighth Street near Lewiston Civic Theatre expected to re-open by end of April

A Lewiston road threatened by a potential collapse of the former Civic Theatre building is expected to re-open by the end of April.

Work started Monday to install a protective barrier between the 109-year-old structure and Eighth Street.  The city condemned the building and closed the road last August after a large roof truss failed, leading to concerns over the stability of the west wall.

Lewiston officials say an 8-foot-high chain-link fence will be installed this week to contain any stones that fall off the building.

The city accepted ownership of the property last month from the Civic Theatre, which couldn’t afford the repairs to the roof and other issues.  Contractor estimates are being solicited to determine potential costs of fixing the structure or perhaps its demolition.  (LMT)
