New law expands PTSI coverage for Idaho first responders

A new law going into effect Monday enables Idaho first responders receiving workers’ compensation coverage to get professional help for post-traumatic stress injuries suffered as a result of their jobs.

Before the new law effective July 1st, first responders couldn’t get workers’ compensation for PTSI – also known as PTSD – unless it’s tied to a physical injury. Supporters of the bill said this is a step in the right direction towards letting first responders know it’s okay to seek help.

Championed by Boise Democrat and House Minority Leader Mat Erpelding, the bill passed both chambers overwhelmingly.

The law includes a four-year sunset clause in case the number of insurance claims spikes, though Erpelding doesn’t expect that to happen. (Boise State Public Radio News, KTVB)
