The Idaho Legislative leadership could have high turnover, as several challenges are expected during next month’s capitol elections.

The House’s assistant majority leader, Brent Crane of Nampa, will challenge sitting House Speaker Scott Bedke of Oakley, while House majority caucus chairman John Vander Woude of Nampa takes on Majority Leader Mike Moyle of Star. Bedke has been House speaker since 2012.

The votes happen December 5th when House Republicans meet behind closed doors to vote for their leadership team. The outcome could have an immediate effect on committee assignments, as well as who fills vacant chairperson’s spots on the House Education Committee and the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee. The leadership team also helps set the agenda for the House, where Republicans will hold a substantial 56-14 majority.

Two wide-open races will follow Crane and Vander Woude abandoning their spots in leadership, with two nominees vying for assistant majority leader, and three candidates for majority caucus chair.

One leadership race looms in the Idaho Senate, as Todd Lakey of Nampa challenges Assistant Majority Leader Steve Vick of Dalton Gardens. (IdahoEdNews.org)
