A committee researching sixth- through eighth-grade middle schools for the Lewiston School District meets for the first time next week.

Earlier this year, the Lewiston School Board directed district staff to look into the middle school idea, as the new high school set to open in 2020 will house students in grades 9 through 12. The school board deemed the transition from the current 7th-through-9th grade junior high schools to middle schools a logical step.

The committee, which holds its first meeting next Monday, likely will present its recommendation to the school board this spring.

Meanwhile, the school board is expected to vote next month on a proposal to raise wages for the district’s crossing guards.

Currently, beginning pay is $7.71 an hour, an amount below the hourly federal poverty calculation. Superintendent Bob Donaldson said he’d like to increase the starting pay to almost $10, and board members were in support of the move. (Lewiston Tribune)
