Idaho billionaire Frank VanderSloot, a registered Republican, says he’s endorsing the Democrat running for superintendent of public instruction.

Vandersloot in an announcement Monday says he’s supporting Cindy Wilson because it’s time to improve the state’s education system with a strong, results-oriented leader.

Wilson, who taught for 33 years, is challenging Republican incumbent Sherri Ybarra in the November 6th election.

Vandersloot was a finance co-chairman for Mitt Romney’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, and also spoke at the Idaho Republicans’ 2016 convention in Nampa. Vandersloot says he views increasing teacher pay and reducing the number of teachers leaving for out-of-state jobs as the biggest challenge.

He says Wilson’s work on the governor’s education task force on teacher pay shows she knows how to meet those issues head-on. (AP)
