Canada’s marijuana leaglization puts Idaho on “an island”

Canada officially legalized marijuana for recreational use on Wednesday, essentially putting Idaho on “an island” surrounded by legalization.

The country’s move allows for pot use to the north of the Gem State, and recreational marijuana is legal in Washington and Oregon to the West, and Nevada to the South, while medicinal pot is permitted to the east in Montana.

While the drugs may be legal in bordering states, possession of any kind is still illegal in Idaho. As a result, the Idaho State Police has seen an increase in the amount of marijuana that’s being trafficked through the state, and increased costs to law enforcement, including prosecutions, housing of inmates, and storage and disposal of evidence.

Meanwhile, Utah voters next month decide on medicinal legalization through a ballot initiative. Should it fail to pass, a special legislative session is expected to approve some form of medicinal law. (KIFI)
