The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has approve an opening date next month for fall Chinook fishing, and while the run is expected to be down from last year, it should still be a good return.

Harvests on the Snake, Clearwater, and Salmon rivers open August 18th.

Idaho Fish and Game fisheries managers expect some 18,000 adult fish to return to Idaho, which compares with 24,800 last year. Of the fish returning, about one third are natural origin and the rest hatchery.

Most of the fishing opportunity will occur on the Snake River, from the Washington/Idaho border upstream to Hells Canyon Dam, but some fishing will be available on short sections of the Clearwater -from its mouth upstream to Memorial Bridge – and Salmon, from its mouth upstream about three-fourths of a mile to Eye of the Needle Rapids.

The harvests on the Clearwater River, Salmon River and part of the Snake River downstream of Cliff Mountain Rapids close on or before October 31st, while the stretch of the Snake from from Hells Canyon Dam downstream to the rapids is open until November 18th at the latest. (IDFG)
