A group is working to save the former home of the Lewiston Civic Theatre from demolition.

The Anne Bollinger Performing Arts Center Task Force wants the 111-year-old sandstone church building to be referred to by its official name, which comes from opera singer and Lewiston native Anne Bollinger.

City officials condemned the building in 2016, when a large roof truss failed and compromised its structural integrity. A leaky roof was the culprit, but the incident shed light on several other problems that would take millions of dollars to fix. The Civic Theatre, unable to afford those costs, deeded the building last year to the city of Lewiston.

The city has spent about $70,000 repairing the building, but several city councilors say the Bollinger should be put out of its misery.

Task force members hope to convince the council to hold off on demolition, which one estimate pegged at between $230,000 and $270,000. (AP, Lewiston Tribune)
