The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the Idaho median household income increased by nearly $1,600 during the last five-year sampling.

The American Community Survey data collected from 2012 to 2016 show the median household income in the state to be just above $49,000, which is lower than the national number at about $55,000.

The bureau creates a rolling sample of estimates to show characteristics of the population.  Eastern Idaho had the highest and lowest median household incomes with Teton County at more than $58,000 and Clark County at little over $32,000.  About 15 percent of the population statewide fell below the poverty line.

Among other statistics, 58 percent of Idaho’s population age 16 and older were employed, while 37 percent were not currently in the labor force.

Idahoans who don’t own their homes saw a $55 increase in median gross rent, from $709 in 2007 to 2011, to $764 in 2012 to 2016.  Between 2012 and 2016, 10.5 percent of Idaho’s population age 5 and older spoke a language other than English at home.  Of those, 62 percent also spoke English.  Ten percent of Idaho’s population 18 years and older were veterans.  The largest number were veterans of the Vietnam era, at about 39 percent.  (AP)
