Lewiston City Council approves Nygaard as city manager

The Lewiston City Council has approved the hiring of Alan Nygaard as Lewiston’s next city manager.

Six of the seven councilors backed Nygaard’s appointment Monday, with the lone dissent cast by Ryan Johnson.  While Johnson says he’s confident that Nygaard is competent and capable of running the city, he voted ‘no’ out of protest, saying a requirement for five years of city manager or administrator experience unfairly narrowed the hiring pool.

The 57-year-old Nygaard succeeds Jim Bennett at the beginning of the year.

Nygaard was most recently the director of business services for capital planning and development for the University of Washington campuses.  He has also been the assistant executive director for the Pierce County Housing Authority, city manager at Newcastle, Washington, and city administrator at Sumner, Washington, where he currently resides.  (LMT)
