A north Idaho jury began deliberations Thursday in the murder trial of a man accused of killing a Coeur d’Alene police officer two years ago.

29-year-old Jonathan Renfro faces first degree murder in connection with the 2015 shooting death of Sergeant Greg Moore.

Moore stopped Renfro while walking through a Coeur d’Alene neighborhood that had become the victim of recent car burglaries.  Investigators said Renfro pulled out a gun, shot Moore, took the officer’s gun and then sped off in his car.

On Thursday, the jury began to deliberate his fate after hearing closing arguments from both sides.  Prosecutors argued that Renfro had shot Moore to avoid going back to prison.  The defense said Renfro had no intent to kill Moore, but did intend to shoot his bulletproof vest out of fear.

The jury continues deliberations Friday.  Renfro faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.  (AP, KREM)
