Authorities say the 15-year-old boy who opened fire at a high school south of Spokane is expected to be tried as an adult.
Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said Thursday that Caleb Sharpe will likely be tried for premeditated first-degree murder after he killed a fellow student and wounded three others Wednesday morning at Freeman High School in Rockford.
Sharpe made his first appearance in juvenile court Thursday, and court documents revealed that the AR-15 rifle and handgun used in the attack were taken from his father’s gun safe. The AR-15 jammed, and Sharpe used the handgun in the killing of another sophomore boy who intervened, before firing into the crowded hallway.
Video surveillance showed Sharpe then throwing the handgun down, and being confronted by the high school janitor, who subdued the suspect.
The three girls wounded in the shooting are in satisfactory condition at a Spokane hospital.
Meanwhile, Moscow police are investigating alleged threats against students at Moscow High School. Authorities say a handwritten list of names with the heading “people to shoot” was discovered recently and threats were made on social media.
A juvenile has been questioned and the case is being forwarded to the Latah County prosecutor’s office. (Spokesman-Review, LMT)
