Bills aim to aid Washington job seekers with criminal history

Washington state lawmakers are considering measures that would prevent certain employers from being allowed to force an applicant to check a box if they have a criminal history until after the person is determined to be otherwise qualified for the job.

The Washington Attorney General’s Office would be in charge of enforcing the new rule by imposing warnings and fines of as much as 1-thousand dollars for each violation.

Exceptions would include jobs in law enforcement, state agencies, schools, and other businesses that supervise children, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable adults.

The measure cleared the Senate by one vote earlier this month.  A similar bill awaits action in the House.  (AP)
